What is the best blade profile? Radius? Skate? Stick? Equipment?
Many ask me what the best skate blade profile, radius, stick, curve, flex, skate setup is.
I have an unpopular answer: I have no clue.
I spend ALL of my energy looking at NHLer's body mechanics. I spend zero energy considering their equipment. Here's why:
I used to be obsessed with what equipment would give me the edge. I worried about skate blades, and curves, and profiles. But unfortunately, I was looking in all the wrong places.
I thought curve and flex would fix my shot. But it NEVER would because my mechanics were garbage.
When you look to equipment to solve your mechanics problems, you're looking in the wrong spot.
I know that most people will read this, ignore it, and continue to ask about equipment.
Like strength and conditioning, equipment is necessary but not sufficient. You need to have workable equipment that works for you. But beyond that, if you spend time thinking about equipment, you're not thinking about mechanics. And when most people have mechanics that don't work for them, they're looking for an answer in the wrong place.
So that's why I don't answer questions about equipment. Plus, I don't even know! I'm just totally uneducated on equipment - and totally uninterested.
You might be thinking, "Ya, but Datsyuk is picky with his sticks..."
Sure. Come talk to me about equipment when you have Datsyuk's body mechanics. Or Sidney Crosby...I'll have an equipment conversation with you. Until then, to get the most out of your game, have conversations about body mechanics.
In case you're wondering, here's my setup:
- I use a 1" hollow
- I have a 9.5" radius
- At the time of writing this article, I wear Bauer Supreme 1S, size 8.5
- I use a CCM stick p28 85 flex
Because it works for me and I'm not spending another ounce of energy on it until my mechanics are like Nathan MacKinnon, Connor McDavid, and Rasmus Dahlin's. If you're serious about development, you'll take the same approach.
